Oh I'm gonna get a lot of hate for this one (¬‿¬ )!
At first, I didn't really understand the appeal of furryism. I thought, like many people, it was an extreamily cringe thing that only the weirdest of weird people took part in. Over time however, I have learned that it actually doesn't affect me, and for most people it is just a hobby. There is no real difference between someone dressing up as Scooby-Doo or as a furry character, or as their own furry OC.
Recently though, I have unfortunatly discovered that a lot of the people who dress up as furries (those I gave the benifit of the doubt to as just having a "hobby") do it for "other" reasons as well. That being sexual. You see it everywhere, from furry porn to overexagerated body proportions on people who are dressed up as furries. I decided to look into this community as I wondered if anyone else was weirded out by it. I mean, these are animals being sexualized, isn't this zoophilia? Right?!
Intead of finding people who thought like me, I was instead shocked to find that within the furry community, this is completely normal! It seemes as if this discussion was settled long ago with something called the "Harkness Test". For those who don't know, it is a three-step criteria that has to be met in order for it to be okay to sexualize an animal character. It has to have at least human-level inteligence, be able to communicate and needs to be mature for its species. Personally I feel that this is zoophilia or at the very least is normalising it. Especially if it is a fully or mostly-fully animal character then yes it is zoophilia.
What worries me is how much this sounds like loli. The whole, "Sure they look like they would not be able to consent but canonically..." bulshit people try to pull. It's weird, I'm out.
BarleyTheBurr is a creator who I used to enjoy, and is a furry. I'm not calling him out directly but I do want to give an example. In one of his videos he began to sexualize a bear character. Not a fursona (which would be bad enough), but an anatomically accurate illustration of a bear. He also makes other questionable sexual content about animals but I'm not going to get into that. But I do think that this kind of zoophilic behavoir is normalised and is allowed to grow in furry communites. Personally I think it is disgusting to see hyper-realistic drawings of animals having sex and I will not apologies for having that opinion becuase they are "anthropomorphic". As if that makes it any better?!
